Yes, it's tempting to just throw Caleb into the middle of the pool and let him figure out how to swim. I'll own that up front.
But I'd really like for him to enjoy the swimming pool, so we're moving at his pace. He spends quite a bit of time playing on that top step. Rachel brings his bath toys, and so he'll just sit and play with his back to the pool. I'm not entirely certain he even realizes that there is a giant pool behind him. We're hoping that he becomes comfortable enough with the water gradually, wanting to learn how to swim.
Of course, I also realized that I don't know how to teach a child to swim. I guess I never gave this much thought. Now I realize that I'm very, very uncertain, just like I am of everything else in the world of parenting!
